Howling dogs: the facts (too late to  block your ears).

Howling dogs: the facts (too late to  block your ears).

Sometimes creepy. Often funny. So why do dogs howl? A throwback to when they were wolves? Yes, naturally. But there are other reasons dogs turn their throats skywards, some of which may surprise you.

  1. Dog howling is a community-gathering tool. In the wild, dogs used to howl as a beacon to steer their ‘scouts’ back to the pack after a hunt.
  2. Setting boundary alerts. A dog howl will let other canines know that the area they’re considering moving into is already marked and taken. So don’t even think about coming close.
  3. Dogs often howl as a fretfulness response. Being left alone for extended periods, separation anxiety, and sadness can trigger howling episodes. (Complaining neighbours is a good way to know.) Dogs exhibit the same range of emotions as us, with similar responses.
  4. Environmental stimuli often result in a dog howl. For instance, something on TV. We have all seen funny videos of pets howling to a song. Or when we howl – dogs seem to want to join in. Exactly why do audio triggers can spark a howling episode? Still a mystery.
  5.  Injury alert. Dogs let you know when they’re injured or in pain. We often scream out in pain – howling is how dogs do it.

To help de-stress your dog, we have the perfect solution. It’s called “Stress! Whaddya mean I’m stressed!”  A delicious supplement treat, made from a perfectly balanced formulation of specially chosen organic herbs and plants. One ingredient baked into these treats is SkullCap, well-known for being a mild sedative, helping to ease nervous tension, as well as being a nervous system tonic.
